Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire stopped Mexico’s Fernando Montiel in the second round (TKO) of their bantamweight title fight on Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The 28-year-old fighter from Bohol landed a powerful counter left hook that sent Montiel to the canvas, but surprisingly rose before the count of ten. The Mexican went on to absorb a few more jabs before the referee stopped the fight at 2:25 in Round 2.
With the victory, Donaire claimed the WBC and WBO bantamweight crowns. He has won 25 consecutive fights, raising his record to 26-1 with 18 knockouts.
